Coach Search Quick Hitters

Not much news to report today on the coach search front now that Tom Bradley has been pushed to the back burner.  Speaking of which:

- The rumor going around is that Bradley wasn’t hired because of a disagreement over compensation for his coordinators but I have been told in no uncertain terms that [...]

Coaching Search Update - How the Worm Turns

Yesterday Tom Bradley met with university officials and left that meeting under the impression that the job was more or less his, a fact that he communicated in some manner to certain individuals in State College.  I ran the blurb last night on confirmation from two sources, one in the local Pittsburgh media and [...]

Tom Bradley To Be Next Pitt Head Coach

Hot on the heels of Paul Zeise’s article in the Post-Gazette today stating that Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley finally got his long awaited interview at Pitt (along with Alabama linebackers coach Sal Suneri) news has just been leaked to BB&G headquarters (located right behind the coffee machine in the vending area deep [...]

Panther Coaching Update - 1/4/11

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.

- United State Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld [...]

Phil Bennett Named Interim Coach, Will Coach Bowl Game

The Post-Gazette has just reported that defensive coordinator Phil Bennett has been named as the interim head coach and that he will lead the Panthers in the BBVA Compass Bowl against Kentucky after Dave Wannstedt turned down the invitation to coach the team one last time in the game.  Wannstedt will be announcing his decision [...]

Panther Coaching Carousel - Take II

It is truly the end of an era.  The glorious reign of Mike Haywood, Esq, the city’s foremost statesman and man of letters as well as the only undefeated coach in the storied history of Pitt football, has finally reached its conclusion and I believe that the man summed up his tenure best in his own words when he said:

“It isn’t fair,” Haywood said shortly before Nordenberg fired him. “The truth will eventually come out.”

Oh wait, that was about something else.

And so, while our old coach awaits his date in court to fight his felony charge (while possibly also looking for the “real” baby-momma choker), most Pitt fans now attempt to turn their attentions to happier and more crassly speculative topics such as whether the Athletic Director will also be joining his coaches on the unemployment line and wither the source of the next future ex-Pitt head football coach.  Allow me to sum up the answer to the first question by saying simply, “No”.  Steve Pederson, no matter what certain corners of the internet are trying to push on you, is not in danger of losing his job at the moment nor was such a possibility even seriously entertained.  Things naturally could still change if it was found that Pederson knowingly and willfully deceived the administration about certain items in Mike Haywood’s past in order to hire him but I tend to believe that such an event is extraordinarily unlikely.

Now that that piece of rich, savory speculation is out of the way what do you say that we get onto even juicy morsels?  Namely, trying to read the tea leaves and determine who the next Pitt head football coach is likely to be.  Even though the layout that I used did not work terribly well the last time, when I dismissed Mike Haywood out of hand before he eventually got the job, I am going to stick with what I know and set up a multi-tiered list of fresh candidates to pick apart.

Before we start though it is a fine idea to look at what Chancellor Marky Mark Nordenberg, LLC said yesterday in his brief termination statement since it contains a pretty substantially hint of which direction that the administration may be leaning when looking for the next coach:

“We will immediately re-open our search for a head football coach, expanding the process to include a larger pool of candidates. Our goal is to move swiftly, but prudently, to find the right person to successfully lead the Pitt football program for what we hope will be an extended period of time.”

Given that we know that the previous pool of candidates only included current FBS head coaches, and moreover that we know precisely who was on the interview list, that also tells us who may be on this new and improved expanded coaching list.  As a sidenote it also tells us that the administration (and some major boosters) thought that the first list was a pretty shitty piece of shitty shit.

So follow me after the jump, Panthers.  Follow me…to freedom! Continue reading Panther Coaching Carousel — Take II….

Mike Haywood Fired

In the end there was just no way for this outcome to be avoided and this afternoon, precisely as this local correspondent predicted in this space last night, the University of Pittsburgh has dismissed recently hired head coach Mike Haywood for breach of contract.  In his just released public statement Chancellor Mark Nordenberg stated shortly and [...]

Mike Haywood Arrested For Domestic Violence (And Apparently Fired)

Wow.  Just wow.

I had finally talked myself into the idea that Mike Haywood would be a better option going forward for the Panthers than Dave Wannstedt would have been and then, before he even starts to hit the recruiting trail, this happens as Haywood was arrested a few hours ago in South Bend for [...]

Breaking Down Mike Haywood

Well, it is pretty much official at this point as both the PG’s Paul Ziese and ESPN’s Joe Schad are going on the record saying that Mike Haywood is the next head football coach for the Panthers.  While Haywood wasn’t exactly my first choice (nor do I think that he was Steve Pederson’s for [...]

Pitt Coach Search Update: Mike Haywood Set to Take Over

With the Pitt football team scheduled to have a team meeting tonight you can probably expect that something is a done deal on the Pitt head coaching search front.  And given that the other leading candidates list looks like this:

Interested but not contacted: Tom Bradley, Frank Cignetti, Sal Sunseri, Mark Stoops, Teryl Austin

[...]

Panther Coaching Search - Part Update and Part Rank Speculation

The speed at which the dismissal of Dave Wannstedt moved yesterday caught everyone off guard as in a ten hour window we went from Paul Ziese reporting that Wannstedt’s job may be under review all of the way to holding a press conference to announce Wannstedt’s resignation.  This whirlwind firing, and make no mistake [...]

Jonathan Baldwin is Turning Pro

In a move that was a move that was fully expected, Jonathan Baldwin made it official today that he will be foregoing his senior season to head to the NFL.  Baldwin never got the right chemistry going with freshman quarterback Tino Sunseri and he would also likely would had to have learned a new system [...]

Wannstedt Out

The ink was barely dry on Paul Ziese’s speculation on Dave Wannstedt’s future at Pitt before the latest news turned to the notion that not only was Wannstedt’s job on the line but that he was already on his way out.  It had been thought that Wannstedt’s healthy relationship with Chancellor Mark Nordenberg would [...]

Panthers Accept BBVA Compass Bowl Bid

This was probably the perfect end to the less than perfect season for the Pitt football team as the heavy preseason Big East favorite stumbled their way to the line and their “Big East co-championship” only to see them end up in the Big East’s fifth choice bowl game as the Panthers accepted a [...]

Pittsburgh's Week in Sports: November 22-28

What a great week in Pittsburgh!  Our teams went 6-0-1, the Pens had an overtime loss to the Rangers being the only blemish on the week.  Pitt won the 2k Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, edging out #22 Texas in the Championship.  Pitt football beat out USF and the Steelers [...]
