Panther Postgame Prospectus

I understand the frustration around the city today, after all the Panthers just certainly missed a chance at a #1 seed and are now destined for the 2 line with Texas, Purdue, BYU and San Diego State while Notre Dame and Duke take what would have been Pitt’s if only they had won yesterday. [...]

The Garden

The only downside to the double bye, aside from the rust that comes from waiting to play while everyone else is into the rhythm of the games, is that it trims the maximum number of games that the Panthers can play in the Garden to a mere three games. That is really a shame [...]

Wanamaker and Gibbs Earn All-Big East Honors

Pitt stars Brad Wanamaker and Ashton Gibbs both earned All-Big East honors this morning as Gibbs was named to the All-Big East First Team and Wanamaker was named to the All-Big East Second Team.  The complete First Team included Ben Hansbrough from Notre Dame, Marshon Brooks from Providence, Kemba Walker from Connecticut, Austin Freeman [...]

Panther Postgame Prospectus

Just for continuity’s sake let’s cover the Villanova game quickly here before moving on to the meaty bits.

Key Indicators

Ortg: 109.1 Drtg: 90.9 eFG%: 45.1% FTR: 63.4 A/TO: 0.92 OR%: 45.8%

Typically I have a lot of respect for Jay Wright but I think that I may have [...]

Panther Postgame Prospectus

Okay, I have no idea of what happened last night in the first half but I think that the people who are worried about this happening regularly in March probably should be filed under the Much-Ado-About-Nothing heading. Getting up for a team that you absolutely throttled once, even after a tough loss to a [...]

Combine Recap – Panther Impressions

The Panther representation at the Combine was something of a mixed bag this year.  Some players tested well, though no one tested so phenomenally well that they became a must-draft player, some players did not perform terribly well at all and one former Panther somehow managed to both impress and disappoint at the same [...]

Poll: Will Pitt Get the #1 Overall Seed in the NCAA Tournament?

Previously, we queried whether the Pens would be able to pull out the Atlantic division and this was your response:

Will the Penguins win the Atlantic Division?

No. Injuries are taking a toll. (53%, 49 Votes) Yes, but just by a hair. (24%, 22 Votes) You know who sucks? The Islanders. (18%, [...]

Panther Postgame Prospectus

Huggins came out with a perfect game plan last night (say what you want about the man off of the court but he knows his way around the game of basketball) when he decided to have the ‘Eers turn the game into a slow-ball slugfest in the first half. With his bench largely nonexistent [...]

Pitt has 6 invited to Scouting Combine

The Pittsburgh Panthers will be represented well at the combine and in the NFL Draft this year.  They have six players who will attend the combine and all of them should be drafted along with a few more non-drafted invitee candidates.  This is the order in which I see them being drafted right now.

[...]

Panther Postgame Prospectus

Saturday was just one of those games, really. When you post your second worst per possession scoring game of the season, your worst offensive rebounding game of the season and your fourth worst turnover percentage game of the season there really isn’t any amount of defense that you can play to overcome that sort [...]

Panther Postgame Prospectus

It isn’t all new internet radio around here however as, in another new addition to the BB&G arsenal, we are pleased to debut the Pitt postgame basketball thoughts and statistical breakdowns of Pantherlair.com poster 13-9. His postgame analysis and wrap will now run here every morning after Panther games until his new BB&G network [...]

Panther Basketball Recruiting Trail Roundup

Lost a bit in the shuffle behind the Pitt football coaching drama, the big Todd Graham National Signing Day push and the Super Bowl That We Shall Not Name is the fact the Panther basketball team is once again having an outstanding season both on the court as well as off.  The Panthers will [...]

Speed, Speed and More Speed as the Panthers Sign 20

Todd Graham faced a steep uphill battle from the moment that he took the Pitt job as he was tasked with assembling a full recruiting class for the Panthers in spite of starting from only four remaining committed players.  To that end Graham and his staff did a fantastic job by leaving literally no stone unturned in order to find players that fit his system, snapping up a host of under-recruited and just plain unknown Southern talent.  In addition to scouting literally everywhere, Coach Graham also made a lot of noise by pushing hard on highly sought after players who were dismissed as un-recruitable by the previous staff.  In the end he may have come up just short on some of the bigger names, including Woodland Hills linebacker Ejuan Price (Ohio State), the McKeesport pair of Delvon Simmons (North Carolina) and Branden Jackson (Texas Tech) and California quarterback Michael Eubank (Arizona State), but the impression that Graham was able to make in such a short time bodes well going forward.

However today isn’t really about bemoaning the players that you failed to land (unless you are Alabama and stud offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio spurned you for your arch nemesis across the state), it is instead about celebrating the players that you did sign.  And in that regard the Panthers did quite well for themselves; not only did Pitt manage to sign a nearly full complement of twenty players but those twenty players are comparable to the recruiting classes of the rest of the Big East conference. (except for Louisville who kicked some serious ass)  Moreover, the players that the Panthers signed today are ideally suited for the hurry-up offense and aggressive 3-4 defense that Graham wants to install…I would not be shocked to see four or perhaps even five of this group make a serious impact as true freshmen and that is a pretty nice ratio indeed.

So come along with me after the jump where BB&G gives you a full run down of the Pitt recruiting class.  We will take a look at who projects at what position, who is a stud and who is a dud and just who might be the biggest sleeper to sign for the Panthers since Greg Romeus.

Todd Graham Expected To Take Pitt Job

Take this for what it is worth but a Tulsa reporter has Tweeted that Todd Graham is expected to take the Pitt job today.  If this turns out to be true, and I do have it confirmed from one other source that an agreement is likely, this means that Graham and the university administration [...]

Tweet of the Week

This week some good comedy on the ridiculous state of the Pitt search courtesy of the71A, who is pretty funny for a bus.

It’s become apparent that Steve Pederson is going to keep finding new people to interview until someone not named “Tom Bradley” accepts.

No word yet, however, on whether a “Bradley Thomas” [...]
