 As most of the BB&G crew was out and about this weekend unable to post about the fantastic sports weekend we had, I thought I would do a quick review. Pirates: Even though the Pirates lost the home opener to Philadelphia on Thursday, 1-0 they bounced back in spectacular fashion. They took [...] Contrary to what Pirate fans are used to seeing, the front office showed that they really do want to turn the corner towards overall team success yesterday as the club and star CF Andrew McCutchen agreed to a 6-year $51.5M contract extension. This is a huge signing for the Bucs as so many fans were worried whether [...] AJ Burnett broke his orbital bone on a missed bunt attempt. Burnett is to have surgery today according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The injury could take 2-4 weeks to heal but the Pirates have not given a timetable on the return of Burnett to Spring Training. Burnett may miss the season opener where [...] The Pirates reeled in A.J. Burnett from the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Exicardo Cayones and right-handed reliever Diego Moreno today. We have been chasing Burnett for nearly a month now but talks have heated up this week as documented by Spanky this week. The Pirates absorbed $13 million of the two years [...] There was an interesting twist in the A.J. Burnett saga yesterday, as MLB.com reported that the Yankees had a deal worked out with the Angels that would swap right handed pitcher A.J. Burnett and Angels DH Bobby Abreu. To no one’s surprise, Burnett vetoed the deal as the Angels were one of the 10 teams in Burnett’s [...] In the last 48 hours or so, it appears that both the Pirates and Yankees have come very close to coming to terms on a deal which could have right handed pitcher A.J. Burnett coming to Pittsburgh by the weekend. Details of the trade discussion were not available but it is rumored that the hang up remains [...] Over the last week or two the Pittsburgh Pirates have been in talks with the New York Yankees about acquiring 35 year old pitcher A.J. Burnett. Sources close to both teams as well as Burnett say that a deal is for the most part complete except for how much of the $30+ million remaining [...] Joel Hanrahan and Charlie Morton both got deals to avoid arbitration today. Hanrahan, who made $1.4 million last year, was due for a big raise after coming off a great season. He made the National League All-Star team and saved 40 games, a career-high. He struck out 61 batters in 68 and 2/3 innings [...] The Pirates schedule is looking rather promising this year. With the opening day game on April 5, 2012, we host the Philadelphia Phillies in PNC Park to start off a new season in hopes to get a winning season for the first time in 19 years. The rest of the season is shaping up [...] The Pirates have been rather busy this off-season. With a total of 44 transactions, they are working to get the team in shape for this year. I am delighted to see they signed 12 pitchers so far, since their current rotation is never going to last. They know that they need more pitchers to [...] The Pirates finally finalized a contract extension with 23 year old outfielder Jose Tabata. He signed a contact extension through 2016 for $14.75 million guaranteed with a three year option through 2019. Tabata is a young talent with a .271 batting average this season and has a lot of good years left [...] After the trade was officially announced which sent Beltran to the Giants for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler, I recieved some disturbing news which was later verified by Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The Pirates made a very aggressive push for Beltran which the Mets were intrigued by just to have Beltran exercise his no [...] Worst Call Ever For all those fans that stayed up in to the wee hours of the morning watching the Pirates and the Braves use every player on their rosters (with the exception on Hanrahan), I hope you were as furious as I was at the way that game ended. What was probably [...]  If you haven’t heard about potentially the worst call in baseball history made by umpire Jerry Meals that took place last night after 1am in the 19th inning of the Pirates v. Braves game to end the game, then you must live under a rock. Because it is everywhere. Just for those of you [...] There aren’t any major developments to talk about today, but it is rumored that the Pirates have cooled on both Iannetta and the recently injured Giambi (Quad).
