With the Steelers being off this week I decided to watch as many other games as I could. The more I watched the better I felt. The division is turning out mostly as expected. Baltimore has the division lead and Cleveland is bringing up the rear. Nothing out of the ordinary for the division.

The Steelers are in first place in the AFC North even without their starting quarterback. At 2-0 the Steelers have a one game lead heading into Tampa Bay. A game we definitely can win. If we go to 3-0 it would be a huge boost while getting ready for Roethlisberger’s return.

Last week I was reading the AFC North Blog on ESPN, like I do most mornings and came across this little blurb about how Carson Palmer and Joe Flacco are supposed to be two of the elite quarterbacks this year in the AFC. The actual list was put together by John Clayton, who has probably been covering the NFL since before I was born, so no disrespect but I need to dissect this a bit.
Well, first let’s talk about the qualities that constitute an elite quarterback. Is there a straight formula? I don’t think there is. Each elite quarterback, is elite for different reasons. Let’s look at the indisputable elite: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady & Brett Favre. They are all Super Bowl champs and future Hall of Famers that can pick apart any opposing defense. Regardless, I don’t think that any of those are the actual reason that they are elite. While they contribute, they aren’t the deciding factor.
- Peyton Manning is elite because of the above and because in his 12 year career he has thrown for over 50,000 yards, has a 64.8% completion rate and a 95.2 average passer rating. He’s been league MVP four times and is third on the all time touchdown passes with 366 behind only Brett Favre and Dan Marino.
- Tom Brady, I think is elite because he won three Super Bowls. I think he has also been blessed with a great supporting cast throughout his career. But he’s no slacker either. In his 11 year career, he’s thrown only 99 interceptions and has a 93.3 average passer rating. His most impressive stat is that he is 14-3 in postseason games and 97-30 in regular season play.
- Brett Favre. Now, I’m more than in favor of him retiring after 19 years in the league, but he’s a current elite quarterback. He has a Super Bowl, he will be in the Hall of Fame probably the first time he’s eligible. While Favre’s average passer rating isn’t great at 86.6, it’s not bad. He holds the title for most touch down passes at 497 which is 77 more than 2nd place, Dan Marino. He’s only had one season with a totally losing record.

As promised, here is the part two of the AFC North All-Criminal Team. I think this is shaping up to be quite a talented football team. Though, the defensive unit is not quit as well rounded as the offense. While I [...]
